Chapters

Safari Club International offers tremendous benefits to both Chapters and members. The more that Chapters and members take advantage of everything SCI has to offer, the more value SCI has to them. With these tools, SCI and its Chapters and members are better equipped to protect the freedom to hunt and promote wildlife conservation worldwide.

SCI is unlike any other organization of hunters in the world. This is particularly true when it comes to local Chapters. SCI Chapters are not subdivisions of the club as is the case with other hunter organizations. Rather, SCI Chapters are freestanding corporations that are tied to SCI by a form of licensing.

When subdivisions of other organizations hold local fundraisers, all or almost all of the revenue generated goes to the main organization. With SCI Chapters, the local Chapter keeps 70 percent of the proceeds from their largest fundraiser to be used for local programs and 30 percent goes to SCI to help offset myriad expenses, including costs for many services that cannot be financed or conducted at the local level.

SCI and SCI Foundation receive about $1.6 million annually from the 30 percent Chapter contributions. About $700,000 is used to support the chapters directly. This includes the costs related to the Chapter Service Specialists, Regional Reps and the liability insurance that is provided. The remainder of the funds are used to support SCI/SCIF mission programs, which both directly and indirectly benefit Chapters and members.

Safari Club International Chapters are often referred to as the “backbone of the organization” because they do so much to advance the SCI mission. Chapters are the local face of an international group; are key when it comes to the success of membership recruitment and retention; performing the majority of conservation, education and humanitarian services projects; providing innovative ideas and best practices and playing a major role in raising funds for the organization.

In addition, chapters provide dedicated volunteers to serve on the Board of Directors and rise through the ranks of the volunteer leadership of the organization. A new member of SCI is probably surprised at all of the things that chapters do for the organization. They are likely also surprised at the list of services that SCI provides for chapters.

Bluntly, the symbiotic relationship between SCI and the hundreds of local Chapters allows members and leaders at all levels, to be more effective in protecting the freedom to hunt and promoting wildlife conservation worldwide. Local chapters benefit directly and indirectly from the work of both SCI and SCI Foundation.

Yet members often ask: Where does the money from the 30 percent that chapters send to the international organization go? What do the chapters get for that investment? There are both direct and indirect dividends to Chapters for that investment, as well as the direct and indirect dividends for individual Chapter members.
